Church Deacons

The scriptural qualifications for the sacred office of a deacon is set forth in 1 Timothy 3:8-9:

"Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for gain; they must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience."

The practical qualifications for effective deacon service are given in the church by-laws:

  1. Loyal support of the church and its pastoral staff.

  2. Faithful to every service of the church unless hindered by reason approved of good conscience.

  3. Encouragement of and participation in all organizations of the church program.

  4. A tither of income in faithful support of the church and the Lord's work.

  5. A personal witness for Christ, interested in the salvation of souls at home and abroad.

  6. A Christian who attracts people to Christ.

  7. Willing and able to attend meetings of deacons.

The duties of the deacons are also specified in our church by-laws:

  1. To promote the unity of spirit of the church in the bonds of peace.

  2. To serve as a council of advice and conference with the pastoral staff in matters pertaining to the welfare and work of the church.

  3. To establish and maintain personal and fraternal relations with the membership. seeking to know their physical needs, their moral and spiritual struggles, and to serve relieveing, encouraging, and developing all who are in need.
